Enjoying the Cultural Heritage of 9th Arrondissement

The Opera District is the 9th arrondissement of Paris. The area, which is on the River Seine, is filled with historic monuments and a rich heritage. As the name suggests, the region is around the Paris Opera, which makes it a favourite whether you are visiting the Fresh Capital for the first time or have been living there for a while. The area is a lively business district, giving people yet another reason to want to live here. You can find luxurious Opera apartments rentals in the Ninth District that epitomise the elegance of the place. The Opera district covers a large part of the 9th arrondissement as well as parts of the 1st and 2nd arrondissements of Paris. The most important monument in the area is of course the Palais Garnier: its façade, its marble columns, its gilding, its monumental statues. It’s worth a visit.  Created by Charles Garnier, the theatre is the symbol of the Second Empire. Today, the stage of the Opéra Garnier is specifically dedicated to ballet, but you can still visit the building without attending a performance. The entrance ticket gives you access to the Museum and Library of the Palais, to the various salons and clothes turnstiles, as well as to the Grand (and monumental) Staircase. Tickets can be purchased on site or booked online.

Culture and Shopping District

The French Capital is famous for its culture, and this is one area to find it. Two sections of the 9th District are responsible for its reputation. Palais Garnier is where you find the Opera, and with it, comes an interesting history. The Opera Garnier goes back to Napoleon III during the urbanisation of the country. The plan was to leave the streets bare so that people could see the beauty of the place. To this day, the Opera remains one of the architectural attractions of Paris. Any music and performance art enthusiast will find this part of the district hard to resist with its daily performances.

Boulevard Haussmann is the other part of Paris 9 that contributes to its culture. This area is lined with a selection of department stores that carry some of the finest French fashion, including perfumes, clothes and handbags. Galeries Lafayette is where all shopping dreams come alive. The magnificent building is a collection of some of the world's biggest brands. If it's not for that shopping experience, the building is a masterpiece. The dome-shaped structure opened in 1894 and is considered one of the biggest contributions to Art Nouveau. This area is the symbol of Haussmannian Paris with its grand boulevards, its recognizable buildings... Other surprises await visitors: the Fragonard Perfume Museum, Paris Story, the Grévin Museum, galleries and covered passages. With the department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, the Opera district is also a meeting place for shopaholics.  If you have the opportunity to visit Paris in winter, and particularly during the end of year festivities, defy the cold and go and admire the splendid Christmas windows of the Boulevard Haussmann and enjoy the magical  light spectacle. Indeed, the shops are constantly evolving and today the Galeries and their various buildings occupy a large part of the Boulevard Haussmann. This geographical diversity also makes it possible to offer a wide range of products  to suit a multitude of budgets (from kitchen appliances to top-of-the-range ready-to-wear). The Gallery will therefore delight both small and large budgets in a sumptuous setting steeped in history.

Places to Visit

The 9th arrondissement of Paris has plenty more to offer besides the Opera and the shopping district. For exciting dining experiences when visiting Paris 9, the portion that is South of Pigalle metro has a stretch of restaurants that offer numerous options. The area has a few bars that are perfect for an entertaining night out. Musée de la Vie Romantique is a must-see for any art aficionado. The museum holds Romantic artwork from some of the great painters in France. There is also an exhibition of George Sand's personal effects. Walking the Rue des Martyrs is another activity to include when in the ninth district. Learn the legend that gave the street its name from the locals while you pop into a boulangerie or fromagerie.

The architecture and organisation of this district is undoubtedly one of the best legacies of Second Empire urbanism.
