From Les Halles to Beaubourg, from Montorgueil to the banks of the Seine, stroll through the oldest arrondissement in Paris.

The "Belly of Paris", as Emile Zola called it, was until the 20th century the nerve centre of commercial activity with its huge covered market, its vendors, its smell, its craftsmen. Today, commerce is just as dynamic. Culture and relaxation are on the agenda at the Théâtre de la Ville, Théâtre du Châtelet, and the Nelson Mandela Gardens. It is a very pleasant, lively and young district.

Chatelet is located between the 1st and 4th arrondissements of Paris, which are home to the Place du Châtelet, the Théâtre du Châtelet, famous for its shows, operas, concerts and musicals, and the Théâtre de la Ville, a Mecca for contemporary dance. Both are housed in the setting, in the centre of the square, of the Fontaine des Palmes, a listed historic site that honours the exploits of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Gothic-style Tour Saint Jacques, to the east of the Châtelet, is the last remnant of the church of Saint Jacques de la Boucherie, and the starting point for the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. There is also the Centre Pompidou dedicated to all forms of visual culture, the Centre is the place where fine arts rub shoulders with design, architecture and photography. Exhibitions rotate and themes change to maximise the possibilities.

It's just a few steps from the rue Montorgueil. This street full of character is a must! Here, one of the oldest shops in the city, is the Stohrer patisserie, dating from 1730. Don't miss the beautiful façade of the Rocher de Cancale, a bar-restaurant with metallic decorations. The blue and yellow wood was once frequented by Honoré de Balzac.
